About this deal

You can firmly attach onto timbers between 3-1/8” to 12-1/8” thickness with its large adjustable vise. I think I will hire the Makita one for a day anyway and see of the clamp and plunge system is better than the Festool method. I am not looking for a chain mortiser, I am looking for the type with a frame to hold the post and the guide bar attachment on the saw to do the mortises. Poking a hole for a mortise works, but I've found it is cleaner and faster to hog out the hole with a drill or boring machine.

The Makita Chain Mortiser is ideal for timber framing and log home building and great for any woodworker needing to cut mortises in timbers or logs. blockquote>Posted By: blacksmith

Posted By: JoinerReplacement chains for chain morticers are eye-wateringly expensive. It shouldn't be too difficult to make or have made a simple clamp on drill press for accuracy, you could move it along the the mortice with each drill hole. It requires way to much force to be applied to the small locking lever to hold when applying the locking lever.Soon after i t s introduction t he a pp arently weak band sa w was developed so as to cut the hard -est w ood of any thickness with accuracy, economy and convenience undreamt of. At the moment i am setting the logs on to logs on the ground with notches in them to hold them and mortising them there.

I don't have any personal experiences with using a chain mortiser in log building, but I have used one in timber framing for many years. It being green oak I don't need to be incredibly accurate, but I am doing this on my own and I do need to get the frame built without too much messing about! The 7104L/2 is equipped with a front cover to enclose the cutter chain, pivoting chain bar to enable the user to make 130mm long recangular holes in three cutting processes without having to re-clamp the work piece and single plunge operation. I planned to sell this machine when I'm done with the barn, but I might have to keep it just because it is so well engineered. The 7104L will also cut up to 5-1/8" long by 7-1/4" wide mortises without repositioning the mortiser. It easily and smoothly plunges a first mortise (about 11/16" x 2-1/16" with the 18mm chain) all the way through a 6x6. The sword saw has a riving knife, but that doesn't appear to be useful for tenons as no cut will exceed 175mm. This is the ideal tool for small to medium size timber frame companies, while being simple enough to operate for the "do-it-yourself" home builders.
